The Fine Art of Frogging in Crochet
Hey there, Crochet Nation!
It’s your girl Tracy and I’m here today to talk about the
fine art of frogging in crochet. No, I
don’t mean that fun arcade game from the 80’s, I’m talking about when you make
a mistake in crochet and you need to rrriiiippp it out! (Hence the term frogging).
I’ve got some super easy pro-tips and tricks to share with
you today when you feel the need to frog it out.
1.
Assess the error. Is there a need to frog?
Is your mistake SO noticeable that it needs
to be ripped out? Is it something you
can live with? Did you miss an entire section, a single stitch or even a whole
row? If it’s something that is not really noticeable to anyone but yourself,
frogging may not be necessary. Spare
yourself the aggravation; keep calm and crochet on!
2.
Pro-tip: Stay calm. If you’re aggravated at
yourself and begin to pull and rip out stitches, not only will you have a huge
tangled mess of yarn, but you’ll also be so frustrated that you won’t want to
look at your WIP again. Not to mention the
fact that ripping and tearing out stitches is really bad for your
yarn’s health. Take a deep breath. Grab
a glass of water or wine or whatever makes you happy, and slowly and gently
pull out the stitches to the point where you made your mistake and then
continue.
3.
Pro-tip 2: Have a large yarn bowl or plastic
dollar store bowl handy by your side at all times. This way, if you must frog a few stitches
out, your yarn can land in a soft pile and not become a tangled heap on the
ground or carpet. Less tangles = less
frustration and more enjoyment on your part.
4.
Pro-tip 3: Some yarns are difficult to the point
of impossible to frog. Before you begin
stitching, take a look at your chosen yarn. If you make a mistake, is it going
to be a monumental task to frog? If so, make sure you keep your stitches simple
and that the pattern you’ve chosen is one that you can easily follow. Make a gauge swatch with some inexpensive
acrylic yarn and see how it works up. Remember, sometimes simple is the key to
success.
5.
Last but not least, don’t beat yourself up for
making a mistake. You’re human and we
all make mistakes. Sometimes a mistake makes your piece unique. Follow me on Instagram at 1crochetnation and
