Never underestimate your local thrift store...

Why You Should Never Underestimate Your Local Thrift Store...

I know, I know, I preach the saying "Yarn and Fabric never get better with age."
So what do I do on a runaround day with my sister?
We hit up the local thrift stores in her area of Mariposa/Coulterville California and OMG did we score some finds!
Every time I enter any thrift or antique store I ALWAYS ask the question, "Do you have any crochet hooks, books, threads etc.?"
Sadly, most of the time the answer is no.
But then there's that rare find, that diamond in the rough (Oops, sorry I'm quoting Aladdin again).
Today I was lucky enough to happen upon some of those fun, old-school, 1960's - 1980's WorkBasket magazines and I walked out with 8, good quality issues from 1960-1964 for a paltry $2.00.
SCORE!
And yes, I broke my cardinal rule of never buying yarn or threads at most thrift stores, but there was 2 boxes of vintage Bernat Cashmere yarn from Tibet for only $1.00 each.  I won't be doing anything crochet with it since it is too old and fragile to crochet, but it will make an awesome display item for a shadow box.
This brings me to my next topic of discussion.
Pro-Tips for thrifting and crochet:
1. Unless it's something completely unusual and not to be found again, pass by the yarn and keep on a walking. Don't bother. Yarns and threads do not get better with age. I broke my own rule today, but I already knew what I was going to do with it and it's going to be for a vintage display rather than actually crocheting with it. Finds that like are just way too cool to pass by.
2. Look for hooks. You never know what you'll find. I've managed to find loads of vintage hooks, some steel, bone, bronze and even abalone shell.
3. If you find books and periodicals before 1970 in good condition, snap them up.  Especially, if the price is good. Actual physical books and magazines are getting harder and harder to find, so take advantage when you can.  If space is an issue for you, you can always scan and download the patterns onto a flashdrive and then donate the physical books/magazines to your local stitch group, library, school or after-school program.
