Product Review - Scrub-Ology Yarn by Yarn Bee
This review is based on my own knowledge and experience and I am not being reimbursed, compensated or recognized in any way shape or form from Hobby Lobby or any of its subsidiaries. With that said, let’s get on to the review…
Let me say first off how absolutely excited I was to find this yarn. For many years I made small hand towels, body scrubbers and facial scrubbies from plastic canvas yarn. The colors were absolutely hideous; but at least I could get 2-3 from each 2-ounce skein and people LOVED them! Then (like most hobbies and crafts) plastic canvas went out of fashion and those skeins of plastic canvas yarn went the way of the dodo bird, never to be seen again.
Since then I have searched far and wide to find an acceptable substitute, but to no avail. Imagine my delight and surprise as I was wandering through my local Hobby Lobby store last week and found Scrub-Ology yarns. The color scheme is minimal, but nice and bright and appealing. I took note of 8 available colors that day and hopefully as time and popularity increase, they will come out with more choices.

I purchased 3 skeins at a retail price of $3.99 each plus since all yarns were 30% off that week, I did end up with all 3 skeins for around $10 total.
The texture and feel of this yarn is a bit odd at first. It is very plastic feeling, but since that’s the point, it totally works. Rebel that I am on any given day, I normally disregard the recommended hook size and go with what feels right for what I’m making. Today though, I played by the rules and used a size J hook which was the recommended by the manufacturer size hook. I was pleasantly surprised that the J hook worked as well as it did, since at first glance, I would have picked a slightly larger sized hook since the yarn itself while quite squishy is thicker than other scrubby yarns on the market right now. My thoughts on facial/body scrubber patterns is to keep it simple. My usual go-to pattern is single crochets and rows. One round of an alternating color in single crochet to finish it off and that’s it.

With the 3 skeins, I was able to make 8 standard sized 6” by 8” scrubbies and had just enough to make a 4” by 4” face scrubber. These were super simple to whip up and were very highly anticipated by my friends and family and would make a terrific little stocking stuffer or addition to a spa basket for the holidays or gift-giving. Value-wise, this yarn definitely rates an A+!
My only critique would be that the color scheme is very limited at this time and the labeling can be inconsistent. I did note that 1 of the labels stated it had 79 yds and the other 2 skeins said 92 yds. In the end the yield from all three skeins was nearly identical, so this may have just been a minor labeling error. Crafters with hand issues, sensitive skin, etc. might want to be cautious since the yarn is textured and can be a tad rough on the webbing between your fingers over time. Lastly, I would be cautious when washing and drying your products since the yarn is an acrylic/plastic blend and it may not be a good idea to put it in the dryer or use it for things like hot pads or oven mitts since it would most likely melt.
